CONCEPT
Brash, unkillable troublemaker learning how to stop fights instead of starting them.POWERS
power negation;Disables the powers of other Liminals through touch. Skin-to-skin contact is not required, although Sal's powers might not work if someone's clothes create a significant distance between his touch and their body, like a Hazmat suit. The power negation lasts only for as long as Sal is touching the other person.
This ability has the potential to expand beyond physical contact and to affect an area and/or several people at once, but Sal doesn't yet know how to project his powers like that. He also doesn't know how to not use his powers when he touches someone; the negation effect is always "on." He's able to affect Liminal animals or plants too, but the results are less consistent than they are with humans.
(How Sal's negation powers work when it comes to Liminals who have been substantially altered by their powers is up to the discretion of the other player. Might have an effect, might not, whatever's fine.)
harm immunity;
Physical injuries do not impede his ability to function. For instance, if he's stabbed in the stomach, he will bleed and feel temporary pain, but still be able to continue moving/acting like he wasn't just stabbed. He can still be mechanically hampered by injuries, e.g. cut off a limb and he won't be able to use it.
He's been able to survive both a cracked skull and getting stabbed through the heart, but any serious direct harm (i.e. fatal if it was a normal person) to his brain or his heart will make him go unconscious until he's had time to recover. Ingesting toxic substances will have some effect at first, but then be treated like any other kind of damage, i.e. he'll no longer feel it and it won't impair his ability to function. (This also applies to drugs like alcohol. He sobers quickly and never suffers hangovers.)
Theoretically, he can be killed permanently, but hasn't yet found the scenario that will do it. (Most likely, incurable damage to his brain or heart.) Sal heals from injuries only slightly faster than a normal human, and often relies on Liminal healers for help.

APPEARANCE
➼ 6'1. broad and muscular. works out regularly.➼ brown eyes. black hair. hairy.
➼ just a big dumb guy. often bruised or bleeding.
HISTORY
➼ Raised middle class in an extremely image-conscious family. Sal, never the ideal son, had exactly one thing going for him: he was a highly promising athlete, with a full ride scholarship to Boston University and interest from professional hockey teams. This all changed when he got roughed up too much during one game and spat purple blood onto the ice. At 21, Sal went from being a hockey star to a huge risk, whose talent possibly came not from hard work but from superpowers. He was ejected from the team, losing his scholarship, and then disowned by his parents, who wanted nothing to do with Liminals.
➼ Sal knew he was a freak, but he had no idea what his actual powers were. He could've turned to IRIS for help, but his family had instilled their anti-Liminal sentiments in him and he deeply mistrusted other Liminals. So he came up with a different plan, by accident. One night, Sal drunkenly picked a fight with a Liminal showing off their powers in a bar, and ended up getting his ass kicked—but not before the other guy showed a flash of confusion and fear when Sal grabbed him. Interesting. He figured his powers would kick in if his life was in danger, so he started picking as many fights as he could with random Liminals on the street. (Self-destruction was not not a factor here.) Unfortunately, Sal's powers were uniquely well-suited to getting beaten up by a ton of Liminals without anything flashy or obvious happening. It took getting lit up by a firestarter for Sal to understand he was freakishly impervious to injury, and a couple more encounters after that before he realized it wasn't a coincidence that Liminal powers kept failing around him. (Look. He's not very smart.)
➼ Having been turned out by his family, Sal spent the next few years finding couches to crash on and taking on odd jobs—some legal, some not. He'd been forced to register as a Liminal when he was first found out, but refused to update the records, even as he figured out the scope of his powers and developed a reputation as a drifter who kept starting shit with Liminals in bars all over the northeastern United States. The authorities caught up with him after a couple of years, and Sal served a few months in jail, which did little to endear IRIS to him. (It probably would've been longer than a few months if his childhood friend, Evan Finch, hadn't helped speed along the legal process.)
➼ Sal's most enduring career during this period was as a competitor in underground fighting rings for Liminals, where people (not all of them Liminals) paid good money to see and make bets on people beating the shit out of each other with superpowers. Sal's abilities gave him a significant edge over fighters who relied heavily on their own powers, and he became popular for refusing to tap out even when things got incredibly rough. He was good enough that he even participated a few times in the slightly more above board Liminal MMA fighting circuit. By this time, Sal had warmed up to his powers, and even sometimes enjoyed the looks of surprise and disgust when people saw what he was capable of, but none of this eased his conviction that he was a complete freak of nature.
➼ Several months ago, Sal talked a new friend, Rye Ashburn, into using their powers for B&E and theft of rich people's houses. As a lucrative prizefighter, he'd been invited to parties at a few of these houses, and believed it was easy pickings. For the first few, it was. Then one theft went horribly wrong—Sal was stabbed through the heart by a katana wielded by a freaked out tech bro, and lost consciousness. He woke up hours later to learn that Rye had practically destroyed the house, and the two of them were in the custody of IRIS. Sal was forced to go through an IRIS rehabilitation program for law-breaking Liminals, which... wasn't that bad, actually. He was given room and board, counselors to talk to, and even some helpful insight into how his powers worked.
➼ Sal was offered a job placement at the newly reopened Enodia Research Station, which he accepted. While he's far from one of the most responsible members of the Security Division, his powers make him excellent at defusing conflicts involving other Liminals. And he's trying to stay out of trouble these days. Mostly.
NOTES
➼ One unexpected consequence of his powers is that he's gotten a bit lazy whenever he gets into a fight. Like, just go ahead and hit him. Really fuck him up. This results in far more physical injuries now than before he got used to his powers.➼ Fluent in English, semi-fluent in Spanish.

PERMISSIONS
WRITING: Third person present tense preferred, but I'm flexible. I love logging but I'm a very slow writer. Any length of tag makes me happy.
BACKTAGGING: Yes! I do tend to drop things fast once I'm overwhelmed by my inbox, but if there's ever a convo/log that you want to continue or you thought was important, you can poke me about it.
THREADHOPPING: Totally fine.
PRIVATE FILTERS (IN HIS POSTS MINUS HIM): Go ahead, but if it's getting long and/or no one is responding to the post anymore, please move it somewhere else.
SENSITIVE TOPICS: Honestly fine with most dark topics, but always appreciate a head's up if you're worried something might be too much to introduce in a scene with me. If I don't want to broach a subject IC, I will tell you. If I write a tag that puts you off, let me know and I'll gladly revise.
Potential sensitive subjects from Sal's end: Abandonment by family, anti-Liminal prejudice, body horror. Sal doesn't talk much about his childhood, but he's incredibly honest about the kinds of physical violence he's subjected himself to because of his powers.
SMUT: Fade to black. I'm fine with innuendo and sexually explicit comments, although Sal as a character might be uncomfortable.
CONFLICT: Sal has a blunt, aggressive style of communication that often leads to conflict. Feel free to either escalate or disengage if he's trying to start shit with you.
BADMOUTHING: Go for it. Sal is mistrustful of authority and hierarchal organizations, and also incredibly tactless, so he says stuff all the time that sounds like badmouthing.
VIOLENCE: Sal used to be a MMA fighter and can take an incredible amount of damage. I think him getting hurt is very funny, and I'm always open to it. That said, he will scrap with someone at the slightest provocation, so if your character wants to fight, we should talk it out.
SHIPPING & CRUSHES: I love to give my characters random crushes just for fun; I do not expect a crush to be reciprocated, and will gladly drop it if it makes you uncomfortable (let me know!). [marie kondo voice] I just love mess.
Sal is open to flirting and dating, but has had very few long-term relationships. He is asexual but doesn't have the language or self-awareness to realize that fact, which leads to hot-and-cold behavior in romantic situations. He's uncomfortable with thinking of himself as anything other than a regular heterosexual dude, so he might Get Weird about flirting from non-women.
